Photo connotation exercise

Danger/ Fear

To depict danger and fear we decided to use some props from the class and an over the shoulder angle from a high perspective to establish the dominance of the character in the foreground. The higher angle implies that the character in the background is inferior/ weak. The gun, its placement and the stance of the holder represent the danger in the image and the facial expression and lower position show the fear.

Loneliness

To represent loneliness we used a wide shot and a canted angle. The use of these establish the setting and to isolate the subject of the picture showing that the person is insignificant and lonely as the are all alone within a wide shot. we also used the lighting to connote the loneliness that the subject feels by showing the lightness of the grass to make the bench seem even darker.

Wealth

To represent wealth we used a medium shot from a low angle to connote the power of the subject with the focal point being the money that is on display clearly. By using the medium shot we can see the body language of the person who is wealthy sitting in a boastful manor. To improve this depiction of wealth we can use lighting to highlight the money and a larger aperture to make the money an obvious focal point.

Strength

To portray strength we went for the obvious and took a picture of a muscular man lifting a weight this could be improved in many ways as we did not think to much about the camera angle or the shot distance so if i were to retake this image I would use a wide shot from a low angle as the wide shot would let you see his whole body whilst allowing you to see his surroundings (a gym) which shows him working hard and the low angle would make the subject appear as more powerful as they would tower over the camera showing strength.

Love

To depict love we used a wide shot from a straight on view. By using the wide shot it creates the image that the couple are in their own little world as despite what is going on around them their focus is only on each other and by using a straight on angle it normalizes their love for each other. We also used ambient lighting that was very bright to show happiness and a variety of positive emotions.

  1. Great descriptions here Shannon! I like the use of reflection on some of your camera angles. Watch out for grammar and use capitals at the start of sentences.
